I brush past Sterling, who\u2019s mucking out a stall, headed toward the main office with some important paperwork.<\/p>\n

\u201cHellooooo, Judy!\u201d he calls. \u201cI looove you!\u201d<\/p>\n

I keep on walking raising my hand up with the sign for \u201cI love you\u201d for him to see, and smile to myself.<\/p>\n

Jerry\u2019s always telling Sterling, \u201cYou don\u2019t always have to say you love people, Sterling. It\u2019s ok just to say hello.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a>Oh yeah, we struggle with \u201cappropriate behavior.\u201d We discourage random hugs. We do the Circles<\/a> curriculum so Ranchers can see who it\u2019s ok to hug, and tell them you love them. Those people are in the inmost circle, in the purple circle. (Other circles have varying degrees of distance. When a Rancher is really ticked off at another, he\u2019ll say, \u201cOK, you\u2019re not in my blue circle now. You\u2019re in my yellow<\/em> circle!\u201d) <\/div>\n

Cold!<\/p>\n

Problem is, our Ranchers with Down syndrome have really big purple circles, and they’re really crowded.<\/p>\n

Plus I\u2019ve known Sterling since forever, met him as a three-month old, wrestled with him when he came to camp as a rowdy ten-year-old, have traveled with him on many a road trip. He\u2019s my daughter Kelly\u2019s best-friend-boyfriend-fianc\u00e9, a handsome dude with an impish smile.<\/div>\n

So I claim love-you rights and hugging rights, any time, any day.<\/p>\n
